Engagement gifts are trickier than wedding gifts. The wedding gift has an established tradition and a registry. The engagement gift has neither — and if you get it wrong, it can feel either too little or premature.
What the engagement gift is really for
An engagement gift's job is to mark the transition. Not the wedding — the decision. It should feel personal enough to say "I see the two of you as a unit now," without pretending to be a wedding gift itself.
For close family, we usually recommend something that will be part of the new home. For friends, something that acknowledges the couple as a couple — often small, often symbolic. Both categories fit under a $150 ceiling comfortably.
What we recommend under $150
Love Birds Sculpture — small. Our smallest configuration, at about 5 inches tall, sits well on a bedside table or a mantle in a first apartment. Deeply engraved with the couple's names. First names only or first names plus engagement date, if the couple wants to mark the specific day.
Heart Tree Block — mini. A smaller version of our full Heart Tree Block, sized to sit on a bookshelf. The two intertwined trees form a heart negative-space between them. It reads as unmistakably about a couple without being cheesy.
Bee & Mine Honeycomb (smaller variant). This one plays on the "will you bee mine" wordplay in a subtle way. It has become a popular pick for engagement gifts from friends who want a piece with a bit of humour.
What we'd avoid at the engagement stage
Anything that engraves the wedding date. The wedding date isn't set yet, and putting a placeholder there feels wrong. Save wedding-date engraving for the wedding gift.
Anything oversized. Engaged couples are often between apartments, or planning a move, or in the middle of downsizing for wedding costs. A giant sculpture is a burden. Smaller pieces travel better.
Timing and personalisation
Order 2-3 weeks before you want to give the gift. Personalisation is included in the price — please write the couple's names, engagement date if you know it, and any short line you want engraved on the back. If you don't know the engagement date, first names alone are more than enough.
