Wood is the traditional gift for the fifth wedding anniversary. It's a beautiful tradition — a wood object should outlast the anniversary itself, and by year five, most couples have accumulated enough soft goods and kitchen gear to last a lifetime. What they don't have is an heirloom.
What most wood anniversary gifts get wrong
The default picks tend to be functional: a walnut cutting board, a bamboo cheese slicer, an oak wine rack, a picture frame. Every one of these will end up in a drawer within eighteen months. The reason is that functional wood pieces get compared to other functional wood pieces — and there's always a newer, cleaner, or cheaper version around the corner.
A gift that lasts is a gift that has no direct competitor. It has to be tied to the specific couple, the specific date, the specific reason.
What actually works
1. A sculptural piece with the couple's names and date engraved. Our Infinity Heart Sculpture and Love Birds Sculpture are the two most common 5th anniversary orders we get. Both are designed to sit on a mantle, a bookshelf, or a bedside table and stay there. They are non-functional on purpose. That's what makes them heirloom.
2. A piece that references a specific memory from year one. Was the wedding venue near the coast? An Anchor Sculpture works. Did they meet through a shared love of bees, honey, gardens? Bee & Mine Honeycomb. Are they hikers? A Twin Peaks Heart. The specificity is the point.
3. Something they'll display, not use. This is the deep insight. Wood objects that are used get scratched, weathered, and eventually replaced. Wood objects that are displayed deepen in patina and never need replacing.
Personalisation guide
For a 5th anniversary piece, most couples engrave their names on the front line and the anniversary date in a smaller line beneath. If the couple's kids are old enough to remember the wedding, some parents like to add "The [Surname] Family, Est. [Year]" instead of just the couple's names — it makes the piece a shared family heirloom rather than a couple's gift.
Whatever you engrave, our burn-engraving is deep and permanent. It will not fade, chip, or need to be recut. Five years from now the piece will look older, warmer, and better than the day it arrived.
